Bernie, Gordon and I showed up on 12/29 for the final skate of 2014. We were greeted with cool, clear skies and light winds. A skate to the Xmas lights on 53rd St in the Elmhurst district was chosen.

graphic letter We took a fairly standard path eastward on S St to its tee connection with 34th St where we turned south for two blocks with a turn back east at T St . After crossing Stockton Blvd we entered the beautiful Elmhurst neighborhood.

Gordon had a little more speed in his skate stride and led most of the skate through the beautiful lighting displays along S St between 53rd St and 55th St. Bernie and I met up with him at 53rd St and skated through the lighted arbors that line both sides of the street.

After checking out these lights we looped 52nd St and returned to T St where we skated west to ts intersection with 48th St. We turned north and a house just to the south side of the freeway over-crossing. This display is quite extensive and seems to grow in detail every year.

graphic letter We continued the skate by heading north on 48th; crossed over Folsom Blvd and continued to M St. The air temperature was continuing to drop and we were starting to feel the effects so we skipped stopping at any displays in the "Fab 40's" and just took a direct line back toward downtown.

To finish the skate, we continued on M to the corner of 35th St where we skated north to L St and we skated west to its connection with Alhambra where we skated south to Folsom Blvd; westward on Capitol Blvd brought us to the perimeter of Capitol Park at 15th St .

graphic letter We skated west on N to 4th St and with a zig and a zag we meandered to 3rd St. Turning east on S we  finished back at the start point mid-block 3rd  and 4th.

The three amigos packed our gear and headed over to "Ernesto's" at 16th and S where we enjoyed a little apres-skate food and conversation. Bernie covered the tab or Gordon and I - Thanks Bernie!

The final numbers: ~9 miles of easy urban skating and a thousand lights and priceless fun.

Happy New Year - have a wonderful and prosperous 2015!

Keep Skatin'

Sacramento Skate Patrol Meetings

Tonight we were rained out.

It had rained for days and nights. It rained off and on during the day on Garden HWY in Sacramento, and I called and learned that it also rained off and on in downtown Sacramento.

I will be visiting my sister in San Clemente for Christmas. I will be gone on December 22, 2014, next Monday, but there will still be a Christmas light skate then.

I hope to see you at 3rd and S so we can skate together Monday - December 28, 2014. The 28th will also be a Christmas light skate!

I just skated Downtown tonight. This week I skated east to Alhambra Boulevard, instead of 21st Street. Just a longer Downtown loop.

First, I skated east on S Street to Alhambra Boulevard. Only about 10% of the pavement was wet this week. There were lots of leaves, some of hem wet.

graphic letter When I reached Alhambra Boulevard, I turned north, and skated to Capitol Avenue. On Capitol, I skated west to return to 3rd and S.

At 7th Street I skated south to S Street. I skated west on S to my 3rd and S stating point.

Back at 3rd and S again, I took my skates off and went to KFC for some grilled chicken and soft-serve ice cream. Good aerobic workout and food for me!

Keep rolling all you can!

I just skated Downtown tonight - for a change.

First, I skated east on S Street to 21st Street. About a third of the pavement was wet, and there were wet leaves. SLIPPERY CITY. With traffic and some rough pavement.

graphic letter When I reached 21st Street, I turned north, and skated to Capitol Avenue (downhill fun run). On Capitol, I skated west to return to 3rd and S.

At 15th Street I skated south to N Street. I skated N Street west to 5th Street, skated south, and I was back at 3rd and S, my stating point.

Back at 3rd and S again, I took my skates off and went home. Good aerobic workout for me!

I skated tonight. I skated west to the Sacramento River Promenade, then I skated north by the Sacramento River into Old Sacramento. I then skated west from 2nd Street to the American River Parkway. This was difficult; there is no paved trail between 2nd Street and the Parkway - just rough gravel.

I then skated on the American River Parkway to Jibboom Street (where there is the Discovery Park Bridge). I continued on the American River Parkway on the south side of the American River to Rivervine, where I headed off the American River Parkway to return to Downtown Sacramento via 7th and other Streets. I noticed that the waterfall is no longer active.

Back at 3rd and S, I called it a day and went home. Beautiful skating and great aerobic exercise!

Victor and I skated tonight. We started by repeating somewhat what I skated last week - a smooth skate by the Sacramento River and around Raley Field.

To start we skated north on 3rd to R, west on R over I5 (Dave's Bridge) to the Sacramento Riverfront Promenade, where we skated north by the Sacramento River across Capitol Avenue to the north side of the Tower Bridge. Skating west we crossed the Tower Bridge onto some smooth downhill pavement for a NICE coast to D Street.

graphic letter We skated around in West Sacramento, then we crossed the Tower Bridge back into downtown Sacramento whee we skated around some more.

I skated alone tonight; no one else showed up. I decided to do a smooth, short skate by the Sacramento River

To start I skated north on 3rd to R, west on R over I5 (Dave's Bridge) to the Sacramento Riverfront Promenade, where I skated north by the Sacramento River across Capitol Avenue to the north side of the Tower Bridge. Skating west I crossed the Tower Bridge onto some smooth downhill pavement for a NICE coast to D Street.

on D Street I skated south to Mill Street. On Mill Street I skated east to the RiverWalk, where I skated north (again by the Sacramento River) to Capitol Avenue. On Capitol Avenue I crossed the Tower Bridge on my way back to my 3rd and S starting point.

graphic letter We decided to skate into West Sacramento, but to go further than last week.

graphic letter We skated west over Dave's Bridge (crossing I5). Then we skated north by the Sacramento River to the Tower Bridge, which we crossed into West Sacramento. We next skated south by the Sacramento River on the River Walk Trail to Mill Street (the end of River Walk Trail). We skated west on Mill Street, north to a little loop on Garden Street, then north on 5th Street to Tower Gateway. After looping on this smooth pavement (The Garden Gateway sidewalk), we skated west on Garden Highway to Ironworks Avenue, which took us to Ballpark Drive. I believe this is where we saw a colorful water tower.

From Ballpark Drive, we skated south on Drever Street and Soule Street. Then on Jackson Street, we skated west toward some lights. The lights were on Jefferson Street, which we skated north to West Capitol Avenue. West Capitol Avenue took us to Tower Gateway and the Tower Bridge. We were homeward (3rd and S) bound.

After Ballpark Drive, we were for a time somewhat lost tonight, and it was dark! I don't recommend skating on Jefferson Drive at night; it has some rough spots.

Amon, Victor, and I showed up to skate tonight. We decided to skate the American River Parkway with a different way of entering it from Old Sacramento.

graphic letter We skated north to Dave's Bridge (which crosses over I5) to the Riverfront Promenade. Then we skated the Promenade north into Old Sacramento. From 2nd Street we skated north to the sidewalk that goes parallel to the I Street Bridge. When we got to the top of this sidewalk, instead of crossing over he I Street Bridge, we skated down to Jibboom. WHEEEE!!!!!

graphic letter When we reached Jibboom, we crossed over it onto the American River Parkway. On the American River Parkway, we skated the Parkway north to the Discovery Park Bridge. We then decided to skate the newer American River Parkway (south side of the American River), and return to Sacramento via 7th Street, so we could avoid going back though the gravel into Old Sacramento. After we skated south on 7th Street back into Sacramento, we skated down 2 parking lots and then back to 3rd and S.

Everyone was tired/and or busy the next early morning, so we just went home after our fun skate.

Keep rolling all you can!

Jacob, Morgan's son who has just graduated from college, Morgan, Victor, and I (Bernie) skated tonight. We decided to skate the American River Parkway, which we have not done for some time.

graphic letter We skated north to Dave's Bridge (which crosses over I5) to the Riverfront Promenade. Then we skated the Promenade north into Old Sacramento. From 2nd Street we had to skate west over gravel (a pain in the ass and the bearings) to get onto he American River Parkway. The City should fix this gravel gap.

graphic letter We skated the Parkway north to the Discovery Park Bridge. We then decided to skate the newer American River Parkway (south side of the American River), and return to Sacramento via 7th Street, so we could avoid going back though the gravel into Old Sacramento. After we skated south on 7th Street back into Sacramento, we skated a loop around the State Capitol. Morgan and Jacob left us at this point. Victor and I then skated back to 3rd and S, our starting point.

Victor and I then drove to Chevy's on Garden HWY for food, drink, and conversation. Great night of exercise, fun, and camaraderie!

Amon, Victor, and I (Bernie) skated tonight. We decided to skate around Raley Field and in West Sacramento. This skate is not too long, and it has smooth pavement.

graphic letter We first enjoyed skating north on the Sacramento side of the river (The Promenade). Then, after we crossed the Tower Bridge, we enjoyed skating south on the West Sacramento side of he river (River Walk Trail).

graphic letter When the River Walk Trail ended, we turned northwest on Mill Street and then northeast on Central Street to skate on Garden Street around Garden Park. There is a lot of construction going on. Turning around, we skated back south on Central Street to Mill Street. Mill Street took us to 5th Street. Skating north on 5th Street took us to Raley Field Ticket Offices, where Amon asked that we return to 3rd and S to get his glasses. He complained that he could not see.

Amon, Gordon, Gus and Bernie skated tonight. We decided to skate around Raley Field and in West Sacramento. This skate has not been done recently, it is not too long, and it has smooth pavement.

graphic letter We first enjoyed skating north on the Sacramento side of the river (The Promenade). Then, after we crossed the Tower Bridge, we enjoyed skating south on the West Sacramento side of he river (River Walk Trail).

There is a lot of construction going on. Turning around, we skated back south on Central Street to Mill Street. Mill Street took us to 5th Street. Skating north on 5th Street took us back to the Tower Bridge Gateway.

Next we skated west on Tower Bridge Gateway. Led by Gordon we skated south on Ironworks Avenue to Ballpark Drive. We were able to see a colorful water tower and a restful park. Then, we returned, crossing the Tower Bridge into Sacramento.

The skaters were not satisfied, and they wanted to skate some more. So we decided to visit the demolition going on to prepare for the new Kings' Arena. So we skated east on Capitol and north on 6th to L.

There was a lot of demolition, and we skated on L Street to look at much of it.

Gus fixed his skates and came to skate tonight. As we discussed last week, we skated to look around at the demolition for the Kings' arena. Heading north from S Street on 5th Street, we were soon in he middle of DESTRUCTIONLAND. See photo linked to above.

There is a lot of demolition, and we skated around to look at much of it. Next we skated east to 15th Street, and south to Q Street. There we saw the sidewalks almost filled with chalk art. I am slow, so we looked at chalk art (all around the block) for about an hour. On September 1, 2012, in this same Fremont Park, I did a chalk art that was erased 3 times: My CIA and LBJ killed JFK chalk art.

Skating through Land Park is smooth and beautiful! Passing through Crocker Middle School offered more smooth pavement.

graphic letter We decided to skate south; we have not done so recently. To avoid the roughness of Marina Drive, we skated south on Riverside Drive. I missed skating by the he Sacramento River, but this was OK. Gordon and Victor did a good job leading us forward. We passed Vic's Ice Cream (unfortunately). Soon we were at an entrance to William Land Park, where we took a group photo. Our group photo

Skating through Land Park is smooth and beautiful! Passing through Crocker Middle School offered more smooth pavement and the sight o people training their dogs.

I always enjoy the Marquee at the Tower Theater. Many skaters do.

I did much better this week than last; physical therapy for my knee and skates with smaller wheels helped. PLUS FRIENDLY SUPPORT!

Gus, Steve, Victor, and I showed up to skate tonight. We decided to go to UC Davis on Stockton Boulevard, a skate we have not done for a long time.

graphic letter We skated east on S Street. After a while I had problems. My left skate kept wanting to roll on its outside edge. I tried to minimize this by skating narrow and other tactics. To no avail. I was skating too slow.

Fortunately for me, Gus, Steve, and Victor agreed that we would turn around return to 3rd and S.

graphic letter WOW! So tonight we skated to 29th and S and back to 3rd and S. I had skate, age, and fat problems, but I was able to do this 3 or 4 mile skate. At West El Camino and Orchard, Victor, who lives in Natomas, stepped in with some suggestions how we could best return to Sacramento. Returning on some small streets and nice paths, we were soon back at Gateway Oaks and Garden HWY. From 2nd Street in Old Sacramento we skated onto he American River Parkway.

graphic letter We skated the American River Parkway north to the Discovery Park Bridge. Then we skated down into Discovery Park. WHEEEE!!!!!

graphic letter We next skated out of Discovery Park to Garden HWY. We then skated the American River Parkway trail parallel to Garden HWY east to Gateway Oaks. At Gateway Oaks, we skated away from the Sacramento River into Natomas. We skated Gateway Oaks with its nice sidewalk until it ended just past San Juan.

Then we had a 3 alternatives decision. We decided to skated over I80 into Peregrine Park. We skated a little around the park. Then we rested. Then we started our return. We returned via a Natomas trail. The trail took us to River Plaza Drive which took us back to Gateway Oaks, which took us back to he American River Parkway parallel to Garden HWY. Soon we were returning through Discovery Park and Old Sacramento.

Back at 3rd and S, we decided to drive to Del Taco at K and Alhambra. We talked about all kinds of things, including computers. HELPFUL! A great 12.7 mile skate and social event!

Keep rolling all you can!

After reaching Broadway, we skated around the Marina and south on Ramp Road to the boat launch facility. Then we skated onto the trail by the Sacramento River so we could continue south. We skated south to Sutterville Road, then we skated east on Sutterville Road to the Sacramento Zoo.

graphic letter We let the lions loose, then we skated (quickly) through and around in beautiful Land Park. Then we skated north on 17th Street. We went through a middle school and continued to the Tower Theater and its marque.

From the Tower Theater, we skated west on Broadway, north on 11th Street, and west on S. We were back at our 3rd and S starting point. Gordon went home. Gus and I drove to KFC for conversation, food, and root beer. A great 7.8 mile skate and social event!

Gus, Bernie and I skated the 6/23/14 MNS and took a loop out to West Sac. Our route was a fairly standard one: west on S to 3rd St; north on 3rd to R; west on R to Dave's Bridge to cross I-5; north on the Sac River Promenade to the Tower Bridge; west on the bridge to the Yolo side of the water where we continued west on Tower Bridge Parkway - took a little jog south at Riverfront St - then skated to Ironworks Ave where we ventured south to the water tank and park on Ballpark Dr. The park has a nice layout for being situated next to the railroad tracks - the kids in the neighborhood get a great view of the rolling stock!

Our return loop started at the park and we hightailed it back the way we came. At the return crossing of the Sacramento River we continued off the Tower Bridge onto Capitol Mall and skated to the west side of the Capitol where we found a temporary shot put pitch had been installed to be part of the Golden West Invitational - check out the info here: Golden West Invitational.

After being reminded by the nice Highway Patrol officers that skating was not allowed in the state park we rolled back out to 10th St ; skated south to N St; skated east to 15th where we turned south and took the four blocks south to R St; turned west to skate the Artisan District. Along the way we came upon a little street police action and also met up with one of our skate buds - Tsvi - who just happened to be riding a bike east on R.

graphic letter We continued our skate by rolling R to 8th St ; then 8th to S. We finished mid-block 3rd and 4th.

Let's do the numbers:

Distance: ~ 6.3 miles
Weather: slightly wind, mild temps
Skater tally: three (3).

graphic letter We packed our gear and drove to Del Taco at K St and Alhambra . Good, inexpensive eats and crazy conversation! Perfect!

graphic letter We decided to skate the American River Parkway. When we got to the Discovery Park Bridge, we took the southern and newer branch of the American River Parkway east along beside the American River to the 12th Street Bridge. We then skated north over and down the 12th Street Bridge to the north branch of the American River Parkway.

graphic letter We then then skated east on the American River Parkway to the mile 4 marker, where we turned around and headed back to our 3rd and S starting point.

Returning, we skated the north side of the American River Parkway through Discovery Park. Then through Old Sacramento and south on the Riverfront Promenade to Dave's Bridge. Crossing east over I5 brought us back to 3rd and S.

graphic letter We regrouped at 3rd and S. My Tracks in my smartphone showed we had skated 12.7 miles, but I could never upload the map. Amon and Victor skated even more. Gus and I then drove for food, Drink, amd Conversation to Del Taco. Another great Monday Night Skate: execise and camaraderie!

I am still having a lot of computer problems. Viruses attacked my main computer, and it is still being rebuilt. I am having to use a new Windows 8.1 compter with lousey web, video, and photo software. It is difficult for me to upgrade this website! Gus and I decided to skate some areas that have not been skated to for a while. We decided to head into north Sacramento. We started off by skating to and on the Riverfront Promenade and then into Old Sacramento and onto the American River Parkway.

graphic letter We enjoyed the American River Parkway. When we got to the Discovery Park Bridge, we took the southern and newer branch of the American River Parkway east along beside the American River to the 12th Street Bridge. We skated north over and down the 12th Street Bridge to the north branch of the American River Parkway.

graphic letter We then decided to skate north toward Rio Linda from the northern branch of the American River Parkway. Skating toward Rio Linda we were also on the American River Parkway, which is NICE - no cars, good pavement, and beautiful scenery. After a while it started to get dark, so we headed back to our 3rd and S starting point. Returning, we skated the north side of the Parkway. Variety!

graphic letter We skated 8 to 10 miles. Then back at 3rd and S we drove to Willie's for great food, drink, and conversation. I learn from Gus.

Rollin' the streets of SacTown with me were Bernie, Morgan, Gordon, Gus, Penny - six brave souls out making sure the inline revolution never stops! Penny is fairly new to inline skating - she has had her skates for less than two weeks and she is doing great. Bernie gave a quick impromptu demonstration on the "ready" position for maintaining skate control and being ready to bail out if necessary. Penny wisely showed up with pads and a helmet - cool!

A loop out to West Sac to skirt the west side of Raley Field was chosen. The route would take us over mostly decent pavement and also allow us to skate the nice inclines of the sidewalks of the Tower Bridge Gateway on the West Sac side of the Sacramento River.

graphic letter We started on S and skated to 3rd St and turned north for a short hop to 4th St where we turned west and skated over "Dave's Bridge" to cross the I-5 chasm and connect with the Sac Promenade atop the Sac River levee; northward we continued. We took a short stop at the Streetlight Museum along the way to the Tower Bridge where we skated west into West Sac. Wow! Amazing how that works!

graphic letter We rolled down the easy, smooth incline of the sidewalk paralleling the Tower Bridge Gateway to 5th St where we turn southward and move along the perimeter of Raley Field. We continued on 5th to its intersection with Mill St where we turned southeast and skated to the south side extension of the River Walk.

graphic letter We skated north on the smooth expanse of this part of the River Walk to its intersection with the Tower Bridge Gateway and we crossed over to the north side section of the River Walk. We skated the length of the walk and continued down a short incline section (just past the CalSTRS office building) and skated the lower sidewalk of the walk. This path took us back to the Tower Bridge and we skated east to enter the fine realm of Sacramento. Morgan broke off from the crew to skate to his office building to hop on his bike for his final 11 miler bike ride home - awesome human-powered transport!

graphic letter We finished the skate with a reverse of the outgoing route along the Sac Promenade to "Dave's Bridge" and 4th St, etc. I gave another impromptu lesson to Penny about proper body positioning on skates - try to keep your shoulders, butt and heels in vertical alignment and your knees bent and practice skating figure eights to develop edge control. She's going to get an information headache from Bernie and me - really, she skated great. Roll on Penny!

Let's do the numbers: ~ 4.7 miles of fun, perfect weather - temps in the low to mid 80's and a light breeze, six skaters started and six skaters returned - the universe is whole...

Gordon, Bernie, Penny and I hung out a Vallejo's to grab a bite to eat - Gus called it an evening and boogied home.

Keep Skatin'

I had a great skate tonight first skating east on S Street. Then, after skating south on Alhambra, skating east on T Street to 59th, where I headed north to M Street and east on M to Elvas, which took me to Sac State.

At Sac State I headed for the 6 floor parking lot, and got in the elevator. From the top: WHEEEE!!!!!

The parking lot was especially GREAT tonight. There as daylight until after 8:30. Since it was a holiday, there were no other cars. Traversing from side to side: WOW!!!!!

To return, I took M St. west to Alhambra and then skated west on Capitol Blvd. Soon I was back at my 3rd and S starti8ng point (after 11.9 miles of skating).

I was tired, and Tara had called me. I drove straight home. Wonderful exercise and fun!

Tsvi and I skated north and west to to the Riverfront Promenade, then north by the River into Old Sacramento. From Old Sacramento we walked and skated onto the American River Parkway. On the Parkway we skated north to the Discovery Park Bridge. Next we skated over and down the Discovery Park Bridge into Discovery Park. WHEEEE!!!!!

graphic letter We skated out of Discovery Park to Natomas Park Drive. We next skated down Discovery Park Drive into Natomas. WHEEEE!!!!!

In Natomas we skated around on some VERY smooth parking lots. And we encountered some bears! See photo linked to above.

After awhile, we returned, skating up Natomas Park Drive to Garden Highway, and back down into Discovery Park. WHEEEE!!!!!

graphic letter We next skated out of Discovery Park to to the top of the Discovery Park Bridge. Then we skated on the branch of the American River Parkway on the southern side of the American River for about a mile. Then we turned south, skating by water works and sculptures on smooth pavement to Richards Boulevard.

Crossing Richards Boulevard, we skated south on 7th Street back into Sacramento and 3rd and S, our starting point. Along the way, a dog on a leash attacked us, causing me to crash into a handrail on a building, seriously hurting my left hand little finger. Tsvi helpfully put my little finger back into joint.

So it was a good work out. About 10 miles of skating and talking. Afterwards we both headed home.

Gordon and I showed up for the skate and a southbound loop was chosen. This loop would take us up on the Sacramento River Promenade going south through Miller Park with a connection to the recreation trail continuation just past the south Miller Park boat launch and parking lot.

graphic letter We cruised along the "Black Ice Highway" recreation trail toward Sutterville Road. A slight headwind was pushing against us but we kept rolling - smooth rolling all the way to the recreation trail access point.

graphic letter We next skated east on Sutterville Road to the Sacramento Zoo. Then, after a brief break, we skated in serpentine fashion into and through Land Park. its 15th Ave twists through the park and we followed its serpentine spine to its connection with Park Road where we skated north to connect with 18th St; exiting the park and rolling into the beautiful neighborhood between the park and Broadway. Along the way we stopped at California Middle School for a quick regroup.

graphic letter We got rolling and rolled north to Land Park Dr and Broadway with a quick stop at the Tower Theater. After a marquee check we skated west on Broadway to 11th St; turned north and continued to the connection with S St; turned west on S and continued to our final destination mid-block 3rd and 4th.

Gordon and and I kicked back at Vallejo's for food, drinks, and contestation. It all adds to "priceless" - another great skate.

I skated west on S Street, then north on third, then west on O to the Riverfront Promenade - going around the Crocker Art Museum. I next skated north to the Tower Bridge. I skated east over the Tower Bridge to 5th Street. Photo above documents how shallow the water is. Around this time it started to rain intermittently. Enough to make the weather cold, the pavement slippery, and my bearings possibly slower.

On 5th Street I skated south to Bridge Street, east on Bridge to Riverfront Street, and south on Riverfront to Mill Street. I next skated south on Mill Street to the River Walk Trail.

The River Walk Trail is on the west side of the Sacramento River. Skating north took me to the Tower Bridge. I next skated east over the Tower Bridge, and south on the Riverfront Promenade to Dave's Bridge. Skating east over Dave's Bridge helped bring me back to my 3rd and S starting point. The pedestrian bridge is neat - not really pedestrian.

After skating north on Second Street, we skated west onto the American River Parkway, which required us to cross a block of construction dirt and confusion. On the American River Parkway, we skated north to the Discovery Park Bridge, where we turned west to skate down into Discovery Park. WHEEEE!!!!!

From Discovery Park we skated north onto the American River Parkway parallel to Garden Highway, which we skated west to Gateway Oaks Drive. On Gateway Oaks Drive we skated north to the end of Gateway Oaks. At that point we had 4 great options:

  1. Skate on Natomas trails and a street back to Gateway Oaks.
  2. Skate onto the Pedestrian Bridge over I 80.
  3. Skate into Natomas Industrial Park, as we used to.
  4. Return the way we came.

graphic letter We chose to skate over the pedestrian bridge (the less pedestrian option). After skating over I 80, we arrived in the smooth pavement of Peregrine Park.

graphic letter We enjoyed skating back over the smooth pedestrian I 80 bridge. We returned via the Natomas Parkway, which we skated to River Plaza Drive, which took us back to Gateway Oaks, which took us back to the part of the American River Parkway parallel to Garden Highway.

Gordon, Morgan, and I (Bernie) skated April 21, 2014. We decided to skate to a place in Natomas.

graphic letter We started west on S St to 3rd St; turned north on 3rd to R St where we skated west; crossed over "Dave's Bridge" and continued north on The Promenade to its intersection at Capitol Mall. Into Old Sac, we skated Neasham Circle to old 2nd St. We traversed the four blocks of Old Sac to old I St where we skated west; crossed through the dirt and rock strewn morass that spans between the end of old I St to the American River Parkway.

graphic letter We skated north on the recreation trail; paralleling Jibboom St; continuing through Matsui Plaza at the main water intake facility. We continued north to the Discovery Park Bridge. We had decided to skate to a place in Natomas, but after we reached the Discovery Park Bridge, we decided to skate to the new 7th Street construction instead, since Morgan had to go that way. We all agreed to this direction change.

graphic letter We restarted our skate by taking the Two Rivers Trail and continued east toward the 12th St Bridge. At the Riverine Circle cutout we skated into the business/mixed use development just off North 5th St. There is an interesting water feature that anchors the development and we skated the pedestrian path that serpentines its way from the "headwaters" down to the final fountain. The rivulets and fountain have clear, clean water and feature bright LED illumination - this will be a signature anchor of this development.

graphic letter We cut out of the business park at the intersection of N. 7th and Richards and continued skating south toward the bright lights of Downtown Sac. At the north perimeter of the Alkali Flat section of Sac we turned east on F St and continued to 10th St. On 10th we skated south. Soon Morgan left us to go home.

Gordon and I skated around town and around Capitol Park, then we returned to 3rd and S, our starting point. We had skated 7.4 miles. We next enjoyed food, drink, and conversation at Vallejo's. Another great Monday Night Skate!

I was the only one to show up tonight, so I skated by myself. I skated slowly looking for a railroad station at 400 Harbor Boulevard. The railroad station offers scenic railroad rides on Old River Drive parallel to the Sacramento River to Woodland. For more information: Sacramento River Train .

I skated west over Dave's Bridge to the Riverfront Promenade. Then I skated north to the Tower Bridge. I next skated North over the Tower Bridge into West Sacramento. Soon I was skating west on West Capitol Avenue, which is on the map as "Lincoln Highway". I skated West Capitol Avenue to Harbor Boulevard. The sidewalk of West Capitol Avenue is a mediocre skate because the flat sidewalk is FREQUENTLY interrupted by slanting to the street driveways.

Reaching Harbor Boulevard, after passing quite a few intersections, I skated north, passing 400 Harbor Boulevard to Riverpoint Court. I had seen no railroad stations. I took a photo, and turned around and headed back to 3rd and S on February 10, 2014, This time (April 10, 2014), I continued skating north to Reed Avenue. I stopped skating north at Reed Avenue, because the Harbor Boulevard sidewalk stopped and Harbor Boulevard became a dark narrow street. This time I was again about 2 miles from 400 North Harbor Boulevard, when I turned around to return the way I came. Link to February 10 Google map, of similar skate.

After about 8 miles of skating, I was tired and back at 3rd and S. The next day I learned that I lost I lost 2 pounds.

Penny, a new skater, skated with Gordon and me tonight.

To start, we skated north on 3rd Street, then over Dave's Bridge over Highway 5 to the Sacramento Riverfront Promenade. This Promenade is a great smooth skate right beside the Sacramento River on its east. We skated north on the Promenade to the Tower Bridge.

graphic letter We next skated west over Tower Bridge to River Walk Trail where we skated south on the west side the Sacramento River. This is a nice skate alongside the river; smooth pavement, no cars, sun-powered night lighting. All of this area around Raley Field surrounded by these streets and trails: Tower Bridge Gateway to Mill Street, from 5th Street to River Walk Trail. We meandered through this and adjacent areas. Lots of fun! So we did an extra loop around this area before skating home over Tower Bridge back to 3rd and S.

After the skate, Gorden and I shared talk, food, and drinks.

My cell phone and camera did not work, but I had a wonderful time! I hope everybody else did too!

I was disappointed that no one else came to skate, but I needed exercise, so I skated anyhow. I had a great skate.

Ahh, on an unseasonably balmy St. Patrick's Day evening, Steve, Bernie, Morgan and I showed up to skate. We chose a skate to the north side of Sacramento to visit the Township Nine at the River District Business Park.

graphic letter We started the skate going west on S St, to 3rd St, turned north then turned west on R St and crossed over I-5 via "Dave's Bridge". We continued north on the Sacramento Promenade atop the levee. At its intersection with Capitol Mall we crossed into Old Sac; skated Neasham Cir to Old 2 nd St and skated to Old I St; west on I St and connected to the recreation trail access. On the trail we skated north; at the Matsui Waterfront Park we stopped momentarily as the park was fenced off with temporary fencing for a construction project. We detoured to the older section of the recreation trail that passes under the raised approach of the water intake facility and we continued north past Tiscornia Park and the Jibboom Bridge entrance to Discovery Park.

Onto the Twin Rivers branch of the recreation trail, we skated eastward to the new business/mixed use development at the north extension of 7th St. We traversed the tumbling waters of the fountain work; Morgan and Steve circled the main fountain a couple of laps; we exited the business park at its Richards Blvd entrance.

North 7th St carried us into the north side of downtown then skated east on F St. At 10th St we skated south for two blocks where Morgan broke off to his office and his bike ride home; Bernie, Steve and I continued south on 10th St.

graphic letter We skated on 10 th to N St and turned east to skate to 15th St where we turned south and skated to R St. At R we skated west; through the artisan district to connect back with 10th St where we turned south and skated to S St.

graphic letter We skated west on S St to finish up the loop at mid-block 3rd and 4th St..

Checking the stats provided by Steve's Google map: 7.3 miles; average speed 4.3 mph. We had perfect weather: temps in the 70's with a light breeze from the north.

Steve called it an evening; Bernie and I headed over the Willies on 16th and Broadway for apres-skate eats and conversation. Good food - good fun!

Keep Skatin'!

Morgan, Gordon and I showed up for the skate on a wonderful, unseasonably warm evening. Shima and Dwayne were two new visitors to the MNS. Shima, had her skates but no protective gear. So she chose not to roll with us. She may be back to check out the skate!

graphic letter We chose a quick roll to West Sac to skate the River Walk (North and South) so we got rolling on S St going west to 2nd; crossed over “Dave’s Bridge” to the Sacramento Promenade; skated north on the smooth concrete strip to the Tower Bridge where we continued west over the Sacramento River to West Sac; turned south immediately after crossing the bridge (Tower Gateway/Lincoln Hwy) and took the beautiful River Walk South. West Sac has set this ribbon of smooth asphalt and it is a joy to skate – well illuminated by LED luminaries. We took the RWS to its end point and turned west to roll to Mill St then connected to 5th St and skated north to Raley Field. A quick photo op was taken at the park – Gordon and Morgan provided the action while I snapped the shutter….Graphic link 2 above.

graphic letter We left Raley Field and skated back to Tower Gateway (Lincoln Hwy). Graphic link 3 above.

graphic letter We turned east and skated to the corner of the gateway and 3rd St. Skating north on 3rd we skirted the ziggurat building and skated up the sidewalk on the north side of the CalSTRS building. Graphic link 4 above.

At the top of the levee, we rolled the River Walk North to its terminus and took a quick break at the public bathrooms. Graphic link 5 above.

graphic letter We skated south on the River Walk North back to the Tower Bridge; skated east back into Sacramento, taking the Capitol Mall to its intersection with 10th St.

At 10th St we skated north to the vicinity of F St where Morgan bid us adieu and headed to his office to hop on his bicycle for his 11 mile ride home. Human-powered transportation! Morgan and I turned back south and skated 10th to N St where we turned east and skated to 15th. At 15th we skated south to R St and we skated the beautiful smooth concrete of the “Artisan District”. At 9th St we turned south and skated to S and took S back to the start point.

Morgan and I packed our gear and headed back over to R St to hang out at The Fox and Goose pub and ye olde towne house for their open mike night performances - excellent talent on display.

Let’s do the numbers: 6.8 miles of smooth street-side skating, perfect weather and great fun..

Keep Skatin'

Amon and I skated tonight. Amon wanted smooth and well lighted. I agreed. We decided on a West Sacramento Jaunt by the Sacramento River and around Raley Field. See the Google Map linked to above to understand our route, especially if you click on the Satellite option.

graphic letter We started west on S St to 3rd St; turned north on 3rd to R St where we skated west; crossed over "Dave's Bridge" and continued north on The Promenade by the Sacramento River. Then we skated north by the Sacramento River to the Tower Bridge, where we skated west across the Tower Bridge. As soon as we crossed the Tower Bridge, we skated south by the Sacramento River on River Walk Trail.

on the west side of the Sacramento River, we skated south until the trail stopped going south. Then we skated west on Mill Street to Riverfront Street, where we skated north to Bridge Street. At Bridge Street, I thought of the smooth downhill run on Tower Bridge Gateway that Brian likes. We decided to do it.

graphic letter We turned around, and skated south on River Front Street to Garden Street, where we skated south back to our friendly River Walk Trail (smooth pavement, river view, and lights). We skated north on River Walk Trail to the the north side of the Tower Bridge Gateway. Here we skated west for several blocks of smooth downhill. WHEEEE!!!!!

At 5th Street, we crossed Tower Bridge Gateway and skated south. At Ball Park Drive, we skated east for another smooth downhill run. WHEEEE!!!!!

Now at the south end of Raley Field, we decided to take another loop, by skating south on Riverfront Street. Reaching the end of Riverfront Street at Mill Street, we skated north to 5th Street. Near this time I lost Amon. At 5th Street and Tower Bridge Gateway, I skated east across the Tower Bridge to return to 3rd and S, our starting point.

At 3rd and S Amon and I talked a little, then we both went home. Great skate: smooth pavement, great lighting, wonderful weather, good company. 5. 7 miles.

Bernie, Steve and I skated 2/3 - we chose a route to the north side of Sacramento to the business park that is rapidly being developed just off North 5th St and Richards Blvd.

graphic letter We started west on S St to 3rd St; turned north on 3rd to R St where we skated west; crossed over "Dave's Bridge" and continued north on The Promenade to its intersection at Capitol Mall. graphic letter We skated north on the recreation trail; paralleling Jibboom St; continuing through Matsui Plaza at the main water intake facility (amazingly, the plaza was free of homeless people this evening); glided past the levee-side hotels/motels along Jibboom St, arcing along the Tiscornia Park curve; at the Jibboom St Bridge entrance to Discovery Park we took a quick break - Bernie took a chance on grabbing a photo or two. Grpahic link to photo of Steve and Brian is above.

graphic letter We restarted our skate by taking the Two Rivers Trail and continued east toward the 12 th St Bridge.

Onto 10th we skated south; took a few short laps of Cesar Chavez Plaza - then continued south to N St where we skated east on N to 15th St and then turned south on R St. On R we skated west; cutting through the Artisan District - enjoying the smooth concrete section from 13th St to 10th St. At 10th St we skated south to S St and we skated west back to the start point at S St and 3rd.

graphic letter We packed our gear and drove back to the Shoki restaurant on R St for noodles and broth. Perfect after-skate grub! Let's do the numbers: per Steve's My Tracks map we covered 7.9 miles.

Gordon, Bernie and I were the triumphant trio for the 1/27 skate. Bernie suggested a skate to West Sacramento to visit the area around Raley Field. The field lights and large billboard were illuminated and they were blazing across the expanse between West Sac and Sacramento.

graphic letter We started our skate eastward on S St with a turn north on 3rd. At R St we turned west to cross over I-5 on "Dave's Bridge"; at the Sac Promenade we went north. We took the beautiful, smooth concrete ribbon north to the Tower Bridge and crossed the Sacramento River and entered West Sac.

graphic letter We turned south onto West Sac's River Walk Trail. This rec trail skirts the western bank of the Sacramento River; it is well illuminated (LED luminaries!) and sports smooth asphalt. At the end of the trail at Mill St, we stopped for moment or two to rest our wheels at the large granite blocks at the trail end. Gordon had recently purchased a new camera so he took a photo or two to test out the low-light sensitivity of the camera.

graphic letter We skated west on Mill and connected with 5th St. We turned north and skated to Raley Field. We stopped momentarily at the sidewalk and entrance steps. From this vantage point Gordon asked about an interestingly illuminated building to the west. Let's go check it out. Continuing north on 5 then turning west on Tower Bridge Gateway, we skated to Ironworks Way. The building of interest was somewhere to the south of us but it appeared we had no way to get to the location - Tower Bridge Gateway converts to freeway entrance/exit structures and these would not be paths that are legally skated (never mind the safety hazard). With nowhere else to go we skated south on Ironworks - this is a new housing development and we were skating new ground.

As we rounded the corner of Ironworks Ave and Ballpark Dr we were greeted with a happy occurrence - the brightly illuminated building/structure was directly in front of us - it turned out to be a water tank and well/pump station. The structure is surrounded by a small park (not yet open to public use). The water tank walls are covered with extensive lighting and presents quite a visual feast for the eyes!

After checking out tank we skated north on Tin Ln to Graphite Ln to Copper Ln to Steel Ln which intersects with Ironwork Ave. We skated the traffic circle in the intersection then skated north to reverse our path out of the Ironworks development. Back onto Tower Bridge Gateway where we turned north at the intersection of TBG and Garden St. We skated Garden St and followed its arc to West Capitol Blvd.

graphic letter We cooled our wheels at the Capitol Bowl (this old stalwart has undergone a major face-lift and seemed to be doing brisk business). After a few minutes and a few laughs we skated back onto West Capitol and took its old alignment east back toward Sacramento; crossing under the railroad tracks and continued past the Raley company buildings that straddle both sides of West Cap Blvd. We skated up the Tower Bridge Gateway incline to the west bank of the river where we skated north to explore the north side extension of the River Walk promenade. This recreation trail is a composite of concrete and brickwork - though visually appealing the surface is somewhat treacherous for skating. The seams/grooves of the brickwork can catch wheels and add a risk of catching a wheel. After reaching the end of the River Walk, we reversed our path and skated back to the Tower Bridge approach and skated back into Sacramento via the northern side sidewalk of the bridge. After crossing the bridge we crossed south and connected with the Promenade and skated a reverse of our out-going route.

graphic letter We completed the skated loop around 8:45 pm. Vallejo's was still open so we popped in there for apres-skate food and conversation. Overall, the conditions were perfect - clear skies, light breezes and moderate temperatures, skated distance: 5.6 miles. Bernie tracked our path with is MyTracks app and Gordon took a few photos to complement the write up.

Until next week - keep skatin'

Steve, Bernie and I showed up to skate on MLK Day and we were presented with perfect conditions for skating - clear skies, virtually no wind and moderate to cool temperatures.

graphic letter We started the skate with a nebulous plan to skate toward McKinley Park and possibly loop around its perimeter - so east on S St to 6th St with a turn to the north; our next turn was to be east on R but I was running my mouth and missed the intersection - the over-run was noticed at P St where we skated east to 7th St, turned south and skated two blocks to R St and we continued east on smooth, smooth concrete of the "Artisan District" of R (9th St to 15th St). The Ace of Spades Music Venue was rockin' as we skated past and the crowd seemed quite lively. We took a quick stop at the corner of 15th and R then continued one block farther east to 16th where we turned north.

Our path on 16 th took us up to K St where we skated east to connect with 20th St; turned north and continued to D St. Since we were at the north side of town we skate over to 24th St and skated through Bernie's old neighborhood. He still has property in the area so we took a "skate-by".

South on 24th brought us to E St and we skated  to Alhambra Blvd to the west edge of McKinley Park. A quick jaunt along Alhambra and we were at the Florence Turton Clunie Community Center adjacent to the McKinley Library and the Clunie Pool.  Check out the history here: Sac History seen in Sac Bee .

After cooling our wheels at the front entrance of the Florence Turton Clunie Community Center, we skated around the structure and loop around the pool and connected with the pedestrian path; skirted the eastern edge of the pond to the intersection of Alhambra and H  St.

graphic letter We continued south on Alhambra Blvd to Capitol Ave; skated west on Capitol, crossed under the cross-town freeway, squeezed through the construction cataract in the 29th to 28th block, Biba's valet parking provided a quick cut out of the narrow traffic lane. Our mid-town path took us to 15th St and we turned south; skated the perimeter of Capitol Park.

graphic letter We continued west on N St to 7th St where we skated south for half a block; we cut through the Capitol Towers Apartment complex to cross over to 5th St. Heading south on 5th St we skated to Q St where we skated west to the CalPERS breezeway. We slalomed the light stanchions of the breezeway to connect to R St. The final stretch of the skate loop was the short spit from R St to S St via the parking lot in the area.

Let's do the numbers:  7.7 miles (courtesy of Steve's Google Map), great weather conditions, perfect skating. We packed our gear and went to Ryujin House Ramen House at 18th and S St. for a dose of noodles and broth - excellent eats: Ramen House Ryujin ~龍神~ .

Bernie, Morgan and I showed up to skate; what a great night for skating! Clear skies, no winds, and mild temperatures - let's get rollin'!

Our skate of choice: CSUS by way of S St to T. We skated east on S St; crossing through the familiar sights along the way; Old Ironsides, Ernesto’s, Hook & Ladder, etc. We passed by the Sac Food Co-Op and at 29th St we skated south to T St. Morgan's Bar and Grill is on the corner of 29th and S - this establishment must be checked out...

Turning east on T we skated under the Cap-City Freeway, crossed Stockton Blvd and continued on T St – through the Sunset Park and Sierra Vista neighborhoods - great asphalt on the section from Stockton to 59th St At 59th we skated north to Folsom Blvd; stopped just long enough at the Corti Bros’ parking lot to wait for a break in traffic to continue north to M St. East on M got us to 62nd St with a quick turn onto Elvas Blvd.

East on Elvas to the CSUS entrance we skated through the ped path under-crossing of the railroad tracks on the levee bounding the west side of the campus. We angled north-west on the ped path parallel to State University Dr W. and made quick time to the parking garage at the corner of Sinclair Rd and State University Dr W.

Morgan and I cooled our wheels for a few moments at the elevators of the parking garage while Bernie took a roll down the "Hills of Sacto".  After Bernie finish his downhill traverse, we continued north through the campus to Moraga Way connecting with State University Dr N with an eventual connection to State University Drive and J St. A quick trip along J brought us to our connection point with 58th St.

Our return loop was per standard protocol – 58th to M, M to 35th, 35th to L St, L to Alhambra, Alhambra to Capitol Ave, Cap Avenue to 15th. At 15 th we skated north to L St. At the 10th St we skated north to the E-F Alley and Morgan broke out to continue to his office. He still had his 11 mile ride home - awesome human-powered motivation!

Bernie and I turned back south and skated 10th St to P St; P St to 5th St and we turned west on Q then we cut through the CalPERS building breezeway then we completed our skate with a finish on 4th to S St.

Bernie and I went over to Willie’s at 16th and Broadway. Hey! A great skate requires great food to end it…

Ahh! The first skate of 2014. The conditions were perfect - no wind, cool temperatures and clear skies. Bernie, Morgan cooled their wheels while I strapped on my wheels and pads and helmet.

Since Morgan had skated from his office near 10th St and F St - so he already had about 4 miles or more on his skates - we decided to take a loop to the north side of Sac that way we would pass close to his office and he could conveniently break off and finish his skate. With an 11 mile bike ride to get home, Morgan was putting in his miles on human-powered transport!

graphic letter We started our skate on S; going west to 3rd St then skating north to R St where we turned west to cross I-5 on "Dave's Bridge". After crossing DB, we skated north on the Promenade to its crossing of Capitol Mall/Lincoln Hwy at the Tower Bridge. We crossed the Mall and continued into Old Sac, skated east on Neasham Circle turning north on Old 2nd St. Rolling through the tourist environ of Old 2nd, we continued to Old J where we skated west to connect with the recreation trail..

graphic letter We crossed through the Matsui Plaza at the main water intake facility and Tiscornia Park then took a short stop at the Jibboom Bridge entrance to Discovery Park. We continued east on the recreation trail (Twin Rivers Branch) and skated to the business park at the north side of N. 5th St. Our exit from the recreation trail was via Riverine Dr and continued to N. 7th where we skated south. The business park has an extensive and interesting water fountain./water feature that was beautifully illuminated and shimmering with its rivulets swirling and gushing to their final display at the traffic circle fountain at the foot of the incline of N. 7th.

South on N. 7th we skated into the northern perimeter of Downtown and turned east on F St; continued to 10th and skated a few blocks south where Morgan broke off to his office and his bicycle and his ride home. Bernie and I continued south on 10th to meander to R St where we turned west; skated through the historic "Artisan District" to its intersection with 6th St and skated south to S.

graphic letter We skated S St to the original start point mid-block 3rd and 4th to finish the skate around 9 pm.

Bernie and I packed our gear and headed over to KFC at Capitol Ave and Alhambra.

Let's do the numbers: ~ 6.2 miles, perfect temperatures and skate conditions, great conversation and food.

Keep skatin'
